Annual  Awareness Conference - UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL IN NEURODIVERSE LEARNERS   

ADHD, ASC & LD Belgium is delighted to announce our Annual Awareness Conference on Saturday 16 November 2019.  

Our Conference is designed for Parents, Teachers and other Professionals who work with people who are Autistic or who have ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, - who are Neurodiverse. 

This Conference will be held at ULB Solbosch Campus, Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, in Brussels.  Conference will begin at 08.45 and end at 17.30

Presenters Biographies -

BHU VENKATESANM.O.Th, (Paediatric Occupational Therapist) " Early Intervention Strategies to Maximize Learning in Early Years and Primary School Children"

Bhu Venkatesan has a private practice in Brussels (FLOWERPOTS - one of the first sensory clinics in Belgium) where she treats the 'whole' child, using a combination of Occupational Therapy, Sensory Integration Therapy,  remedial teaching for Dyslexia and Dyscalculia,  uniquely developed and successfully implemented handwriting program,  kids yoga  and add-on programs like, iLs and Why Try.  She is a certified kids yoga teacher and vedic maths teacher.  Bhu also liaises with schools on different platforms to help children in their school settings.  Flowerpots has very recently started a school for special needs in English for the pre-primary age group, which is the first of its kind in Belgium.  

Bhu's presentation will be about Early Intervention Strategies (motor, sensory, cognitive-perceptual, social-emotional) to Maximize Learning in Early Years and Primary School Children.

Prof. Dr. ANNEMIE DESOETE, Full Professor at Ghent University and Artevelde University College (Ghent), "Dyscalculia & Dyslexia: What can we learn from an opportunity propensity perspective and what about Comorbidity with ADHD and DCD?" (DCD is also called Dyspraxia) 

Prof. Dr, Desoete has extensive experience in research in early characteristics of learning disabilities (dyscalculia, dyslexia). In addition she is conducting research on comorbidity (with DCD/Dyspraxia, ASD/autism),  opportunities and propensities,  number sense / numeracity,  motivation,  metacognition / executive functions,  comprehensive reading and spelling,  time related problems and fractions,  serious games and  M - decree.  She was promoter or copromotor of 14 successfully defended PhD studies.  Dr Desoete has published a wide variety of international journals and international books.  She is involved in a number of other journals (Educational Research review, Metacognition and Learning and Journal of Psychoeducational).  She is currently involved in the project of Ghent city ‘inclusion in 4D’ to improve the comprehension and potential of persons with dyscalculia and dyslexia.

Dr. KATE CARR-FANNING is Assistant Professor and Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological, Social, and Behavioural Sciences at Coventry University. "Developing Resilience in Adolescents with Special Needs"   

Dr. Carr-Fanning is a Senior Lecturer in Childhood, Youth and Education Studies in Coventry University (UK). Kate’s background is as a psychologist specialising in Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education, especially for students with ADHD.  She completed her PhD in Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), focusing on the inclusion of students with ADHD in mainstream schools.   Kate’s research interests are education for students with ADHD,  psychosocial interventions for ADHD,  psychoeducation,  mental health promotion,  and participatory research and practice (especially children‘s voices).  At present, Kate is working on the Helping Hands project focused on early intervention and inclusion in schools in Eastern Europe.  Kate has over ten years experience working with SEN charities across Europe. Kate sits on the Board of ADHD Ireland (HADD) and is on the Professional Advisory Boards of ADHD Europe and ADDISS (UK).  

Kate's presentation will be about building resilience and preparing for transitions (e.g., before going into secondary school and before starting university, college or an apprenticeship).    

Dr. PRISHNEE DATTA (Ph.D.) is a practicing Clinical and Developmental Psychologist / Psychotherapist in Private Practice. "Identifying & Managing ADHD and Related Conditions in Adults."  

Dr. Datta practices solution focused Cognitive Behaviour and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy with Mindfulness.  She finished her doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven in 2003 - after which she worked from 2005 until 2013 at the British School of Brussels as the Educational Psychologist and then the School Counselor for Primary, Middle and Secondary students, parents and staff.  She pioneered the Peer Support program for the Secondary School to combat Bullying.  Dr Datta works equally well with children and adults.  Her research interests concern cross-cultural adult child/parent relationships, attachment, parent caregiving, development in adulthood, and old age.  She has published articles on depression, cross-cultural attachment and parent caregiving.  

Dr Datta's presentation will be about ADHD and co-morbidities in adults. http://www.counsellorforyou.com/

Parents and Teachers in Leuven are invited to meet together and discuss any problems their children and teens are having in schools etc 

and any solutions they have found which may help other teachers and parents. Neurodiverse Adults are also welcome to join in the conversation....

Come & meet other Neurodiverse adults and talk together about your situation. What is going well in your life and what tips can you offer to others ? What isn't going so well ? What questions do you have ?
  

The Adults group also have dates booked for  Wednesday 30 October,  Tuesday 19 November,  Wednesday 4 December  and Tuesday 17 December
